Yushima Seido, Origami Kaikan and Tenmangu: A Cultural Walk
I would spend half a day walking from Ochanomizu through Yushima, moving from Confucian learning at Yushima Seido to Japanese paper at Origami Kaikan and the Tenjin tradition of Yushima Tenmangu. Check the date first: the indoor attractions do not all open every day.
Yushima Seido and Edo education
Yushima Seido is at 1-4-25 Yushima, Bunkyo. The Confucius temple moved here in 1690, and the shogunate’s Shoheizaka school was established nearby in 1797. I would enter via the Gyo-ko-mon side rather than rely on the usually closed northern entrance. The imposing black Taiseiden was reconstructed in reinforced concrete in 1935 after the Great Kanto earthquake.

Indoor access is separate from a grounds walk
The temple grounds, gate and outdoor steps can be explored without assuming the Taiseiden interior is open. If seeing Confucian statues inside is important, check the specific public opening dates. Yushima Seido is about two minutes on foot from JR Ochanomizu and one minute from the Marunouchi Line according to the original route notes.

Ochanomizu Origami Kaikan
At 1-7-14 Yushima, the Origami Kaikan continues a paper-dyeing tradition associated with a business founded in 1858. It has exhibitions, a paper shop and a workshop, but seeing craftsmen dye paper depends on whether work is underway. There is no open drop-in space where visitors can simply sit down and fold; classes require separate arrangements.

Origami Kaikan hours and access
The original guide lists ordinary hours of 9:30–16:30 and closure on Sundays, national holidays and some seasonal breaks. General admission is free, while classes are separate. A group of ten or more needs advance arrangements; some exhibition areas involve stairs even when other parts of the building are accessible.

Yushima Tenmangu and the slope
Yushima Tenmangu stands at 3-30-1 Yushima. Its tradition centers on Sugawara no Michizane and scholarship; the present main shrine is an all-cypress structure completed in 1995. The walk from Origami Kaikan is about 630 m, roughly eleven minutes, before time spent looking around. From Yushima Station Exit 3, the shortest approach uses steps; a longer Kasuga-dori route avoids those steps but still slopes.

Shrine visits and the next meal
The usual grounds visiting period is 6:00–20:00, but prayers, shops and special rooms have different hours. I would finish in Tenjinshita with one meal: Delhi Ueno for assertive spice curry or Isen Honten for tender tonkatsu and katsu sandwiches. The route works best when the Origami Kaikan’s closure days and any Seido indoor opening are checked first.
