Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo

キンプトン新宿東京

Leave time for breakfast, art and a walk, while considering the road noise and walking distance.

Consider your travel pace first

  • JR Shinjuku south exit is about a 12-minute walk; Tochomae A4 is about eight minutes.
  • Basic categories range from 24 to 30 m²; Walk-in Shower categories do not have a bathtub.
  • A plated breakfast, 24-hour gym and Social Hour are distinctive. Road noise is a factor for light sleepers.

If your Shinjuku trip allows time beyond shopping, Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo is worth comparing. Art, restaurants and cafés create a New York-inspired atmosphere in Nishi-Shinjuku. I would choose it when I can enjoy an unhurried breakfast and return to relax in the evening.

I would not recommend it simply because it is an international brand. Walking from Shinjuku Station takes time and traffic noise recurs in reviews. If you demand a hotel immediately outside an exit or are particularly sensitive to sound, consider the trade-offs.

For someone who enjoys the hotel’s dining and shared spaces, and who chooses a room around bathing needs and luggage, the experience can be worth more than somewhere to sleep.

Getting here: south exit versus Tochomae

The address is 3-4-7 Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. The official walking references are about 12 minutes from the south exit of JR Shinjuku Station and eight minutes from exit A4 at Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line. I would choose based on the line I actually take, rather than get off at whatever looks closest on the map.

With large suitcases, that walk feels different from sightseeing, especially in rain or with tired children. If I use an airport bus to Shinjuku, I would include the last leg in the timetable and consider a taxi with the bags. I would show the driver the full address and Japanese hotel name.

A4 is the standard walking exit, not an elevator exit that has been verified. If I need a step-free route, I would ask the hotel in advance for elevators connecting to the line I will use rather than encounter stairs with luggage.

Room choice: bathing preferences, floor area and luggage

The room names are similar, but the bathrooms and areas differ. If a soak after sightseeing is essential, I would exclude categories named Walk-in Shower before choosing a bed. A gallery photograph of a beautiful bathtub does not mean every room includes it.

Official categoryArea and bedsHow I would choose
2 Twin Essential Walk-in Shower24 m², two single beds, showerA light-luggage short stay with separate beds and no bathtub
1 King Essential28 m², king bed, bathtub and showerTwo people wanting a soak and room to organize luggage
2 Twin Essential28 m², two single beds, bathtub and showerFriends who want separate beds and to bathe
1 King Essential Walk-in Shower30 m², king bed, showerThose who prefer showers; confirm pet rules separately

A 24 m² room is not capsule-sized, but two people with full-size cases and shopping bags still need to look at the walkway and the area at the foot of the bed. Guest opinions vary. Some found enough space, while others had difficulty storing luggage or wanted a proper desk for work. I would consider working needs as well as the area.

If a window-side bathtub or a larger seating area is important, compare the higher categories and their own photographs. The following bathroom images help illustrate the design options; they are not standard in every Essential room.

For a cot, rollaway bed or connecting room, check the chosen category in advance. The hotel can offer some connecting rooms and cots, but quantities and eligible room categories are limited. A room for two is not necessarily as spacious after a cot is added.

Design, fitness and pet-friendly shared spaces

The shared spaces are characterized by art and places to eat. I would treat this as a city lifestyle hotel and return one evening to sit and enjoy them rather than only entering late at night. Daily Social Hour includes opportunities to meet other guests, with drinks and small bites; check the specific venue and offering at arrival.

The gym is open 24 hours, useful for early risers and guests adjusting to a different time zone. There is no swimming pool. For a hotel vacation built around swimming, that difference matters more than lobby decoration.

Pet-friendly accommodation is a distinctive feature, but not every room and dining seat can host animals. The descriptions of eligible categories differ slightly across official pages. Before booking, I would supply the pet type, size and weight and confirm the room and dining area. Guests with animal allergies should ask for a pet-free room in advance.

A plated breakfast worth giving time to

Breakfast is served at District on the second floor. The official restaurant page lists 6:30 to 11:00, with last orders at 10:30. It is based on ordering dishes or choosing a set rather than taking food from a large self-service buffet. I would check exactly what the breakfast-inclusive rate covers; the restaurant menu and the accommodation package may differ.

Many guests enjoy the egg dishes, fruit and coffee, although some feel the choices become repetitive after several days. I would reserve one relaxed morning without an early train for breakfast here and decide on other mornings around the schedule. There is no need to shorten an airport transfer or excursion to make breakfast.

The pictures record meals served to different guests and illustrate plating, not a guaranteed daily menu. I would inquire about allergies, vegetarian meals or children’s portions when reserving breakfast and allow time for a prepared dish to arrive.

There are also cafés, bars and other dining outlets. The following plate comes from wider hotel dining or a guest photograph and should not be assumed to be part of breakfast. For a particular dish, check the current menu at the appropriate restaurant.

Nishi-Shinjuku: separate park walks from shopping

It is easy to arrange a walk around Shinjuku Central Park and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buildings from here. For department stores and shopping near the station, continue in the direction of Shinjuku Station. I would set aside separate time for walking, coffee and shopping, without forcing every outing into the busiest shopping streets.

Kabukicho is on the other side of the station, not immediately around the corner. Staying around the station for dinner and then returning to the hotel is a different evening from coming back earlier for Social Hour. Decide what the night is for before setting off to avoid unnecessary backtracking.

Short stays and longer visits work differently

For one night, I would prioritize arrival time and the point of departure the next morning. Arriving after midnight and leaving early could mean missing the restaurants and shared spaces entirely, making the walking distance more important. An earlier arrival lets me make time for meals and rest.

For three or four nights, I would choose a room with workable luggage space and confirm the desk, housekeeping schedule and laundry-service prices. This is not an apartment-style stay advertised with an in-room washer or kitchen. Anyone intending to wash clothes or prepare meals themselves every day should compare the everyday facilities carefully.

Light sleepers should consider room orientation ahead of time. Multiple guests mention road traffic, ambulances or nighttime vehicles; other guests found the insulation effective. Those experiences do not establish that every room is alike, but I would request a quieter room away from major traffic, without expecting a guarantee.

Advantages and trade-offs together

My choice: a hotel to spend time in

I would recommend Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo to someone who enjoys design, dining and walking around the city. A relaxed morning breakfast and an early-evening return help make use of the hotel itself. For two guests, first decide whether a bathtub is essential, then compare categories of at least 28 m². Friends wanting separate beds should examine the difference between the 24 and 28 m² options.

If you want to be back in the room within minutes of leaving every train and need a very quiet night, compare alternatives more carefully. Working through walking time, road noise and room layout makes the reasons to like this hotel practical rather than just a beautiful photograph.
