Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa

Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa

If I want to slow down near Shinagawa, I would look at this garden first; room type, bed width and the uphill luggage route from the station also need choosing together.

How would I choose?

If this trip leaves some time for strolling around the hotel and looking at greenery, I would put Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa into the comparison. The Japanese garden is a very present feature, with a different atmosphere by day and by night, and it suits people who do not plan every day down to the last minute.

I would pick the room type first, then arrange arrival. There are 21.1 sqm double rooms, 24.4 sqm twin or King rooms, as well as Deluxe rooms from 32.1 sqm and various suites; walking from Shinagawa with suitcases means factoring in the slope and your own pace. Once these two things are decided, it is easier to enjoy the garden and rest in the room.

First, the strengths and the things to accept

What appeals to me

  • The Japanese garden has greenery, pond views and a night-time atmosphere, worth leaving time to stroll in.
  • One-bed, two-bed and three-person room specifications are clear, so you can choose by bed width and space.
  • Shinagawa transport is available, and Takanawadai Station can be compared for Asakusa Line itineraries.
  • There are breakfast and dining options in the hotel, making a more leisurely stay easy to arrange.

Before booking, think about this

  • From Shinagawa Station to the hotel there is walking and a slope, so large suitcases, rainy days or mobility needs should be arranged first.
  • Rooms with the same Superior or Deluxe name still differ in floor, direction and Club benefits.
  • Some room types are compact in area, so do not expect a standard double room from suite photos.
  • The garden, dining and lounge each have their own usage arrangements — do not assume every service in the photos is included in the room rate.

Location and access: check the exit first when you have luggage

The official listing says about a 5-minute walk from Shinagawa Station’s Takanawa exit and about 3 minutes from Takanawadai Station. When dragging suitcases, I would add in the uphill slope, intersections and the time to find the entrance the first time; before leaving, check the hotel’s official access guide and make sure you are walking to Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa.

To cut down on dragging luggage uphill, you can first check the free shuttle. The official listing currently shows a Takanawa area loop shuttle, departing from the main tower entrance of Shinagawa Prince Hotel; first walk from Shinagawa Station’s Takanawa exit to the designated boarding point, then ride according to that day’s timetable. Check departures and times directly in the official shuttle guide, and when rushing for a bus, also leave waiting time in.

On the A1 side of Takanawadai Station there is a ground-level lift, but the usable route from platform to ticket gate and any parts needing assistance should still be asked about at the station first. Prepare according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation’s Takanawadai Station information; wheelchair, stroller or large-luggage needs should also be confirmed with the hotel regarding ground slope and entrance routes, not just the nearest exit’s minute count.

How to arrange the surrounding area?

I would fit the Japanese garden into a small gap before or after check-in: by day, look at the pond, tree shadows and buildings; in the evening, walk around again according to opening hours and lighting. You do not have to leave the hotel every time for it to count as travel. Seasonal and event decorations change, so photos are a reference for the atmosphere.

If you head toward Shinagawa to eat or go out, remember the slope on the way back. If you have already walked a lot during the day, I would keep dinner or the return-to-room transport simple, so the last stretch back does not become the most tiring part of the day.

From the window you may see the garden, the city or the Tokyo Tower direction, still depending on room type, direction and weather. If this trip is specifically about a certain view, choose a room type with a clear description and confirm in advance, rather than only writing a wish in the remarks.

Room types and space: find the bed that suits you first

Superior Double is 21.1 sqm with one 160 cm-wide bed; Superior Twin is 24.4 sqm with two 110 cm-wide beds; Superior King is also 24.4 sqm with one 200 cm-wide bed. I would first choose by whether two people want to share a bed or sleep separately, then look at how much space luggage needs.

If you want to sit a while longer after returning to the room, compare Deluxe rooms from 32.1 sqm: Twin with two 120 cm-wide beds, King with one 200 cm-wide bed. The three-person version also has two 120 x 203 cm beds plus one 110 x 185 cm bed; the third bed’s length and usable space differ, so three adults travelling together should weigh that together.

Club floors, corner rooms and suites should be checked by their full room names. The living rooms, dining tables and large beds in the gallery belong to their corresponding room types; lounge use and breakfast should also be confirmed by plan. If you want two beds close together, look directly at room types marked Hollywood and the hotel’s arrangements — furniture between two beds generally cannot be expected to be movable.

Specifications are compiled according to the hotel’s official room list. After choosing, double-check floor, non-smoking status and beds; if you want to open two large suitcases at once, comparing usable space and table-and-chair positions is more practical than just looking at bedhead colours.

Room typeOfficial space and bedsHow I would choose
Superior Double21.1 sqm; one 160 cm-wide bedTwo people sharing a bed, rest-focused — think about luggage space first.
Superior Twin24.4 sqm; two 110 cm-wide bedsEach sleeps in their own bed — check between the beds and the foot-of-bed passage first.
Superior King24.4 sqm; one 200 cm-wide bedIf you like a continuous wide bed surface, compare with Double.
Deluxe Twin / KingFrom 32.1 sqm; two 120 cm-wide beds or one 200 cm-wide bedIf you want more time in the room and space to organise things.
Deluxe Twin (three-person)From 32.1 sqm; two 120 x 203 cm beds + one 110 x 185 cm bedThree people in one room — confirm the third bed’s length and luggage flow first.

In-hotel services and arrival arrangements

Check-in is generally from 15:00, and arrivals after midnight need to contact the hotel; check-out time and specific plans should be confirmed against the booking. I would tell the hotel my expected arrival time first, and if I reach Shinagawa early in the morning, I would arrange luggage storage, eating and formal check-in separately.

The garden, public lounges and lobby give the stay more places to linger. People who like to take their time in the hotel can put these spaces into the itinerary; Club lounge and other buildings’ facilities should first be checked for entitlements, hours and on-site rules, rather than assuming from photos that they are free to use.

Some guests praise the service and the comfort of the beds, while others mention different experiences of service, sound insulation or facilities. I would communicate based on my own room type and needs; if quiet, renovation style or a particular direction matters especially, raise it before booking and see whether the hotel can arrange it.

How to arrange breakfast?

For breakfast, look at Grand Café Patio on the 1st floor: the official listing gives a 6:30–11:00 buffet breakfast, with no breakfast reservations accepted. Regular adult price is 4,500 yen, ages 4–12 is 2,500 yen, plus a 13% service charge; breakfast-included plans and membership conditions should each be checked separately, and member prices should not be taken as applying to everyone.

I would decide by the next day’s itinerary: if you want to see the garden and eat a meal slowly, leave the morning inside the hotel; if you are rushing for the Shinkansen or heading out early, first work out the time for eating, packing and returning to the station. The food taken in the photos was the content at the time, and items change.

Guests’ feelings about breakfast are divided: some like the choices, others feel there are not many items. I would put format, time and what I want to eat first. Information follows the official Patio breakfast page; Club breakfast and other restaurant use should be confirmed separately under the chosen plan.

One night or consecutive nights — I care about different things

For one night, I would reserve a short garden stroll so this place’s special feature gets a chance to shine. If you only arrive at night and leave early in the morning, weigh whether you need this kind of restful atmosphere, and arrange the uphill luggage route and return to the station first.

For consecutive nights, I would look more at beds, tables and chairs, and storage. If two people each have a large suitcase, or want to come back to the room to rest every day, the feel of the 24.4 sqm and 32.1 sqm classes differs; for three people, look at the third bed and the passage together, and do not book just because the headcount works.

If you will eat breakfast in the hotel on consecutive days, also factor in your own expectations for variety. Comparing the return slope, daily transport out, and time spent inside the hotel together is closer to real life than deciding from a first glance at garden photos.

Finally, who would I recommend it to?

I would recommend it to people who like gardens, are willing to slow down near Shinagawa, and can arrange arrival transport in advance. Choose the right room type, and leave a little time for strolling and rest, and this stay will have more of its own rhythm.

If you care a lot about barely walking after leaving the station, or two people have a lot of luggage but want the most compact room type, first compare the slope and room size together. Thinking clearly about how you come and go each day and how you unpack makes it easier to enjoy the greenery and calm here.
