Ochanomizu Hotel Shoryukan: Free Japanese Breakfast, Baths and Tatami Rooms
Ochanomizu Hotel Shoryukan
Ochanomizu Hotel Shoryukan combines a traditional Japanese-style stay with a simple complimentary breakfast and a communal bath. I would consider it for Jimbocho bookshops or Ochanomizu’s sporting-goods area. But the smallest tatami single is only 9 m² and sleeping on floor-level bedding is not suitable for everyone, particularly guests with limited mobility or large luggage.
Station access
The hotel gives roughly six minutes from JR Ochanomizu or Jimbocho and three minutes from Shin-Ochanomizu or Ogawamachi, but does not specify every exit. Tokyo Metro shows lifts near Shin-Ochanomizu B2 (Ochanomizu Sola City side) and B3b / a dedicated lift exit on the Ogawamachi side. Walking times from these accessible exits were not verified. For a stroller or luggage, choose the platform lift first rather than relying on the shortest advertised time.
Room comparison
Official room examples include a 9 m² Japanese-style Single A with futon bedding; a 17 m² Double with a 150 cm bed; a 17.9 m² Twin with two 100 cm beds; and a 34.1 m² tatami room with an outdoor bath. Other Japanese rooms are listed at 22 and 28.2 m². Not every Japanese-style room includes a private open-air bath or the same shower layout. A guest who needs to stand up easily should compare conventional beds instead of choosing tatami only for atmosphere.
Breakfast
Breakfast has an important source disagreement: Trip’s Q&A says none is provided, but the hotel’s official breakfast page clearly lists a free light Japanese breakfast from 07:00 to 10:00, last admission 09:30. It includes rice, miso soup, eggs and side dishes, with a choice of egg preparation. Multiple guests praised it in 2025 and 2026. It is a useful home-style meal, not a large rotating buffet. Anyone leaving before 07:00 should plan an alternative.
Guest reviews
Ten original Trip reviews mention friendly staff, breakfast and the public bath positively on multiple dates. Complaints about thin walls, mattress comfort and the smallest rooms belong to particular stays. A guest’s account of tattoo access is not verified current bath policy; the bath should not be called a natural hot spring without evidence. A June 2025 guest also mentioned returning a room key to reception when going out, which may affect daily routines but has not been confirmed as the current rule.
One night or several nights
For one or two nights, the Japanese breakfast and communal bath may offset modest room sizes. For longer stays, decide whether you prefer floor bedding or a Western bed, confirm luggage storage and cleaning, and ask about key-handling rules. I would favor a larger Western-style room for someone who cannot comfortably sit or stand from tatami or who is very sensitive to neighboring-room sound.
